Extremist Hindutva Group Faces Global Shame, Modi’s Narrative Under Fire

12 September, 2026 12:26

An extremist Hindutva organisation has faced international criticism over its alleged discriminatory treatment of women in France, putting India’s Hindutva narrative under renewed scrutiny.

According to Indian publication The Wire, actions by the organisation in France have raised questions about India’s claims of being a modern and progressive country. The publication said the group’s close links with Prime Minister Narendra Modi have drawn further attention to the issue.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported that the incident involving the Hindutva organisation BAPS was against France’s principles of equality and non-discrimination.

Indian writer Sreemoyee Piu Kundu said India is increasingly being viewed internationally as a society facing concerns over discrimination against women and social intolerance.

The international criticism over the treatment of women has also raised questions about India’s claims of promoting gender equality.
