Port Qasim Performance Improves Under PM Task Force Maritime Reforms

KARACHI: Port Qasim has recorded a significant improvement in its overall performance and cargo-handling capacity under reforms introduced by the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms.

According to the available figures, Port Qasim’s annual cargo handling increased from 45 million tonnes to 47 million tonnes, reflecting improved port operations and handling efficiency.

Continued Dredging Improves Maritime Access

Continuous dredging operations are being carried out to maintain the required depth of Port Qasim’s navigation channels and ensure smoother movement of vessels.

Maintaining adequate channel depth is essential for enabling ships to enter and leave the port efficiently while supporting uninterrupted cargo operations.

Customs Reforms Improve Clearance

Alongside improvements in port operations, important reforms have also been introduced in the customs clearance system at Port Qasim.

The implementation of faceless customs assessment has increased transparency and made the clearance process more efficient by reducing the need for direct interaction between traders and assessing officials.

Following the introduction of faceless assessment, revenue collection per Goods Declaration (GD) increased from approximately Rs6.8 million to Rs7.9 million, according to the figures provided.

Port Qasim Improves Global Ranking

The positive impact of the reforms has also been reflected in Port Qasim’s international performance.

According to the World Bank’s Container Port Performance Index, Port Qasim was ranked among the five most-improved ports globally over the past five years.

The improvement reflects progress in port operations, cargo handling and the broader efficiency of maritime trade processes.

Improved port operations, greater transparency in customs procedures and stronger links with industries are strengthening Port Qasim’s role in Pakistan’s economy.
