US-Iran Talks Reportedly Make No Breakthrough

Indirect talks between the United States and Iran have failed to produce a breakthrough, with the two sides continuing to differ over key issues, according to Axios.

The discussions were facilitated by Qatar as regional mediators sought to bring Washington and Tehran closer to an agreement. Axios cited three people familiar with the talks as saying neither side was prepared to move significantly from its position.

Recent negotiations have focused on the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme. Iran has sought to link the reopening of the waterway with changes to the US naval blockade and sanctions, while Washington has continued to seek commitments concerning Iran’s nuclear activities.

According to the report, Qatari mediators also presented a two-page proposal for consideration. The discussions included the issue of the blockade and possible concessions concerning Iran’s nuclear programme.

Axios reported that the lack of progress has raised concerns about the possibility of renewed military confrontation.

The report also said Trump could consider further military action against Iran after the US midterm elections, although any future decision would depend on developments in the conflict and negotiations.

Qatari officials have continued shuttle diplomacy between the two sides in an effort to narrow their differences. Trump has also said he expects further talks with Iran, despite rejecting Tehran’s latest proposal.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has meanwhile said Tehran remains interested in a diplomatic solution and is prepared for negotiations.
