Radio Free Europe Calls Taliban’s Wakhan Corridor Project Impractical, Citing Security and Economic Barriers

15 October, 2026 15:55

Radio Free Europe (RFE) has described the Taliban administration’s Wakhan Corridor project as largely symbolic and commercially impractical, citing geographical challenges, limited trade prospects and security concerns. According to the analysis, the Taliban inaugurated a road in the Wakhan region on October 4, but Chinese experts reportedly see little likelihood of the border opening for regular trade in the near future. The route crosses a mountain pass at an altitude of approximately 4,800 metres, which remains usable for vehicles for only around three months each year.

The analysis also questions the project’s economic viability, arguing that Afghanistan’s limited economic capacity offers little commercial incentive for China. It further raises concerns about public welfare in Wakhan, citing claims that newborn mortality rates reach 30 percent, and criticises the Taliban administration for prioritising showcase infrastructure projects over basic public needs. Security concerns remain another major obstacle, with the analysis referring to a 2026 United Nations report that reportedly identified activities by the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) in Badakhshan. Chinese media have also described the 76-kilometre border adjoining Afghanistan as an important front in counterterrorism efforts.

According to the RFE analysis, China’s principal concern is whether the Taliban administration will take concrete and verifiable action against militant groups operating on Afghan soil. It alleges that the Taliban have repeatedly disregarded Chinese demands for action against ETIM and argues that the risk of cross-border militancy outweighs the potential economic benefits of opening the route. The analysis concludes that the removal of border barriers and the establishment of regular trade links will remain unlikely until Beijing receives credible assurances that militant training facilities and the threat of cross-border infiltration have been addressed.
