Afghan Economic Crisis Forces Teachers to Drive Rickshaws for Survival

Afghanistan’s deepening economic crisis and shrinking employment opportunities are pushing educated professionals into informal work, with reports indicating that some teachers have been forced to leave classrooms and drive rickshaws to support themselves and their families.

Media reports have highlighted the financial difficulties faced by teachers and other educated Afghans since the Taliban returned to power. Prolonged economic hardship, limited job opportunities and restrictions imposed under Taliban rule have added to the challenges confronting the country’s professional workforce.

The reported case of a teacher turning to rickshaw driving illustrates the pressure on educated workers who can no longer rely on their qualifications to secure a stable income.

Economic and education specialists have warned that restrictive policies and continuing financial difficulties are limiting opportunities for skilled Afghans, particularly young people entering the labour market.

The crisis also raises concerns about Afghanistan’s education system. When qualified teachers are compelled to seek work outside their profession, schools risk losing experienced staff, while students face further uncertainty over the quality and continuity of education.

Educated young people are also struggling to find suitable employment, creating concerns about poverty, professional development and the country’s long-term economic prospects.

The reported circumstances highlight the challenges facing Afghanistan under Taliban administration, where economic recovery and the availability of dignified employment remain major concerns. The extent of unemployment varies across regions and professions, but reports of teachers turning to informal work illustrate the strain on household incomes and professional life.
