Zalmay Khalilzad and Afghan President discuss US Taliban deal when United States special envoy met the latter. 

US struck a deal with Taliban militants on a weeklong reduction in violence.

According to the Afghan presidential palace’s statement, President Ghani shared his viewpoint during the meeting.

He told Khalilzad about his effective meetings with local leaders on how Afghan government would handle the peace process.

Meanwhile, Radio Pakistan reported that Khalilzad had led talks with the Taliban on a US troop withdrawal agreement.

Hence, he briefed Ghani on the steps that both sides wouled take after the reduction in violence and then agreement comes into force.

Intra-Afghan disputes

Meanwhile, Afghanistan reconciliation has come under threat due to other stakeholders differences with President Ghani.

Abdul Rashid Dostum has denounced reelection of Ashraf Ghani as Afghan president while supporting Abdullah Abdullah’s stance.
Ghani’s main rival, former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah, declared he would form his own parallel government.
Therefore, uncertainty overshadowed US-Taliban deal also.
Afghanistan’s former vice president and powerful warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum has urged his supporters Wednesday to protest.
Moreover, he declared support for Abdullah’s move.
Election Commission of the country declared Ghani winner of the presidential election on Tuesday.
However, it prompted a subdued response from the international community as well as ordinary Afghans weary of the dragged-out process.
