He offered profound sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

Pakistan fully share the sorrow and grief of our Palestinian brethren and stand by them in this difficult time.

The Spokesperson remembered Dr. Saeb Erekat as a champion of the Palestinian cause who remained in the vanguard of the Palestinian people’s legitimate struggle for the right to self-determination.

Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said his untiring struggle for peace and human rights will always be remembered.

He said Pakistan reaffirms its steadfast support for the Palestinian cause and remains committed to further deepen its fraternal ties with Palestine.

BBC earlier reported that one of the most prominent Palestinian political figures, Saeb Erekat, died with Covid-19, officials say.

The 65-year-old passed away in Jerusalem at Hadassah Medical Center, where he had been admitted last month after being diagnosed with the disease.

Erekat led the Palestinians in on-off peace talks with Israel for many years.

Describing Erekat as a “brother” and a “fighter”, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared three days of national mourning.

Erekat was secretary general of the main Palestinian movement, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), and an adviser to Mr Abbas.
