General Elections 2024 : PTI founder Imran Khan’s nomination papers were ‘rejected’
The Election Commission of Pakistan has rejected the nomination papers of PTI founder Imran Khan from Lahore’s NA 122 and Mianwali’s NA-89 constituencies on Saturday.
The Returning Officer RO decided Imran Khan’s disqualification under Article 63(1)(h) of the Constitution read with Section 232 of the Elections Act, 2017.
On August 5 2023, a trial court sentenced former premier Imran Khan to three years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs100,000 while hearing the ECP’s criminal complaint against the PTI chief for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts.
The article h states that, A person shall be disqualified from being elected or chosen as, and from being, a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament), if :
He/She has been, on conviction for any offence involving moral turpitude, sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years, unless a period of five years has elapsed since his release;
The nomination papers of PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi his son Zain Qureshi and his daughter Meherbano Qureshi were also rejected.
PTI candidates whose nomination papers were rejected include : Zulfi Bukhari, Azam Swati, Qasim Suri ,Hammad Azhar,Hassan Yousaf, Naeem Haider, Intezar Panjotha, Atif Khan, Haleem Adil Sheikh were also rejected.
ECP election tribunals for appeals
The appeals against the acceptance or rejection of nomination papers can be submitted until January 3 and decisions on these appeals will be made by January 10.The list of candidates will be displayed on the 11th of January, and candidates will have the option to withdraw by January 12.
The electoral symbols will be allotted on January 13, and polling for the general elections will be held on February 8.
