Watch: Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’

12 July, 2024 20:26

In another notable blunder, US President Joe Biden accidentally referred to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy as Russian President Vladimir Putin at the NATO summit in Washington.

The mistake was quickly corrected, but not before it drew attention to the president’s age and potential impact on his reelection bid.

During his remarks, Biden said, “And now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination, ladies and gentlemen, President Putin.” He swiftly corrected himself, stating, “President Putin, you’re going to beat President Putin, President Zelenskiy. I am so focused on beating Putin.”

This gaffe comes amid growing concerns about Biden’s age and fitness for office. The 81-year-old president has faced calls from over 15 House Democrats to withdraw from the presidential race, with some suggesting Vice President Kamala Harris as a potential replacement.

Earlier, he mistakenly referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as his Republican rival, Donald Trump. Despite these errors, Biden has reiterated his commitment to running for reelection.

The NATO summit, meanwhile, has seen member nations pledge support to Ukraine in its efforts to combat the ongoing Russian invasion, which began in February 2022. The United States has been Ukraine’s most significant military aid provider during the conflict.
