Amnesty, US lawmakers decry govt crackdown on PTI protesters at D-Chowk
A number of US lawmakers along with Amnesty International have extended support for protestors who participated in protest by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers in for the release of party founder-chairman Imran Khan.
US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, said : “The brutal repression of protesters in Pakistan and growing political violence is an attempt to suppress democracy and human rights [….] I stand with the brave Pakistanis who are rising up and protesting for change. ”
Her statement came in the wake of the PTI’s protest, called off following a crackdown by the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) that resulted in the martyrdom of four Rangers men along with multiple cops.
The PTI, too, claimed that eight of its workers were martyred during the protest.
The latest protest was part of the PTI’s months-long efforts to secure it’s founder’s release. Imran Khan has been in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail in various cases for more than a year now.
The party has reportedly been lobbying in the US to get support and secure the former prime minister’s release.
