PM Promotes Lt Gen Aamer Raza to Four-Star General, Appoints Him Commander National Strategic Command

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has promoted Chief of General Staff of the Pakistan Army Lieutenant General Aamer Raza to the rank of Four-Star General and appointed him as the Commander of the National Strategic Command.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the promotion and appointment were approved on Friday, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extending his congratulations to General Aamer Raza and wishing him success in carrying out this important national responsibility.

The PM Office stated that General Aamer Raza, who was previously serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Pakistan Army, has been elevated from the rank of Lieutenant General to Four-Star General and simultaneously appointed to the key position of Commander National Strategic Command.

“Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated General Aamer Raza, HI(M), SBt on his promotion and appointment, wishing him the best for undertaking this important responsibility,” the statement said.

The position of Commander National Strategic Command was established following the passage of the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025.

Under the same legislation, Field Marshal Asim Munir was appointed as the Chief of Defence Forces, marking a significant restructuring of Pakistan’s military command framework.

The post of Commander National Strategic Command was created after the abolition of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) position, with General Shamshad Mirza being the last officer to serve in that role.

According to the newly introduced legal framework, the Prime Minister can appoint the Commander National Strategic Command from among serving Pakistan Army generals for a three-year term, based on the recommendation of the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces.

General Aamer Raza’s appointment marks a major development in Pakistan’s defence command structure, as he assumes responsibility for one of the country’s most sensitive strategic positions.
