Water supply to Karachi’s areas ‘resumes’

21 December, 2024 00:01

Karachi’s water crisis has eased as the main water pipeline on University Road has been repaired, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) confirmed on Friday.

The 84-inch pipeline, which runs along the route of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project, had developed three consecutive leakages, leading to a disruption in the city’s water supply.

KWSC officials announced that the repair work was now complete, and the pipeline is ready to resume operations.

The repair work has enabled the restoration of 12 water pumps, which are now operational, helping to restore water supply to areas around University Road. The supply from Dhabeji Pumping Station has also been reinstated.

The issues began on November 29 when the pipeline burst during construction of the BRT Red Line project. The leaks led to a loss of water and caused significant disruptions in several Karachi neighborhoods, including Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Safoora, Tariq Road, New MA Jinnah Road, and parts of Saddar, Lyari, and Garden.

The burst pipeline had caused a shortfall of 150 million gallons per day (MGD) of water in the city. Despite multiple repair efforts, the situation had worsened until the final restoration.
