Google Maps decides to rename ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America’ for US users

Google Maps has decided to change the name of “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” after it is officially updated in the United States Geographic Names System.
Google said in an X post, the change will be visible in the US. But, it added, the name will remain “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico.
The tech company further wrote that outside of the two countries, the users will see both names on Google Maps.
Owned by Alphabet’s Google, Google Maps will make a similar change with Mount McKinley.
Hours after taking office on January 20, Trump had ordered the name changes as part of a flurry of executive actions, making good on a campaign promise.
The interior department said, in a statement last week, that as directed by the president, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America.
Earlier this month, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested jokingly that North America, including the United States, be renamed “Mexican America”.
