Cooking oil and ghee latest prices in Pakistan

10 February, 2025 19:20

Cooking has become more expensive in Pakistan as millions face an unusual surge in the prices of ghee and cooking oil. With Ramadan 2025 approaching, the hike in prices of these essential commodities has forced many to rethink their budgets and priorities.

Ghee price in Pakistan

The price of ghee and cooking oil has increased by Rs6 per kilogram. The wholesale price of A-grade ghee has risen to Rs595-600 per kilogram, while B-grade brands are now priced at Rs540-550 per kilogram.

This sudden increase has left many households struggling to manage their expenses, especially during the holy month when consumption of these items typically rises.

Interestingly, the global prices of soybeans and palm oil—key ingredients in ghee and cooking oil—have dropped. However, this has not translated into lower prices in Pakistan, raising concerns among consumers. Many locals believe that prices are being artificially inflated ahead of Ramadan, only to be reduced later to create a false sense of relief.

Ramadan 2025 Moon Sighting

Pakistan’s Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is set to meet on February 28, 2025, to sight the moon for the start of Ramadan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the new moon for Ramadan 1446 AH will occur at 05:45 PST on February 28, but there is no possibility of sighting it that evening. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy or clear in most regions.

Based on these predictions, the first day of fasting in Ramadan will likely begin on March 2, 2025, a Sunday. Ramadan is a sacred month for Muslims worldwide, dedicated to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection.

The rising prices of ghee and cooking oil have added to the financial burden of many families, particularly during a time when food consumption increases.

As Ramadan approaches, the government faces growing pressure to address these price hikes and ensure affordability for essential commodities.
