WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app used by over 3 billion people, has introduced a new feature that allows users to convert voice messages into written text. This update is especially useful in situations where listening to voice messages is not possible.
With this new feature, users can read voice messages as text instead of listening to them. The feature is being rolled out gradually and will be fully available in the coming weeks, making it easier to follow conversations without needing to hear messages.
The feature was first announced in November of last year and uses on-device processing to convert voice messages into text. Currently, it is available on Android, with iOS users expected to get the feature in the coming weeks.
While languages spoken in South Asia and some other regions are not officially listed as supported for transcripts, WhatsApp is transcribing voice notes in several languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.
How to Use Voice Message Transcripts on WhatsApp:
Open WhatsApp: Tap the three dots in the top right corner to open the menu and select Settings.
Go to Chats: Tap on Chats to access chat-related settings.
Enable Voice Message Transcripts: Scroll down and find the Voice Message Transcripts option. Turn it on to activate the feature.
Choose Your Preferred Language: Tap Choose language to select your preferred language from the available list.
Set Up and Start: Make sure you have an active internet connection, and you’re ready to go.
Once enabled, you can transcribe a voice message by pressing and holding the voice note in a chat. Tap on More Options and select Transcribe. The text transcript will appear next to the voice message, making it easier to follow along.
Note: You can change the transcript language at any time by going to Settings > Chats > Transcript.
