Apple M3 iPad Air Review: Apple intelligence leads the way

Apple M3 iPad Air Review: Apple intelligence leads the way
Apple surprised many by launching a new iPad Air less than a year after its last model. Most of Apple’s recent device upgrades have focused on Apple Intelligence, but this update is mainly about hardware. The biggest change? The new M3 chip replaces the M2 in last year’s model. However, does this really make a difference?
Performance: Is the M3 a Game-Changer?
The M3 chip offers about a 12–15% improvement over the M2, but in real-world use, the difference is hardly noticeable. Apps open at the same speed, and even performance-heavy applications like Procreate and Logic run just as smoothly as before. Games like Call of Duty: Mobile may show subtle improvements in graphics, but the changes are minor.
A Much-Needed Keyboard Upgrade
One of the best improvements is the new Magic Keyboard, which finally includes a row of function keys for volume, playback, and app switching.
This makes the iPad Air a more practical laptop replacement. The keyboard also supports passthrough charging, meaning your iPad will charge as fast as if it were plugged in directly. At $269, it’s expensive but a solid investment.
The good news? The new Magic Keyboard is backward compatible with the M2 iPad Air, so if you own last year’s model, you can still enjoy the new keyboard features.
Face ID: The Missing Feature
One of the biggest drawbacks of the iPad Air remains the lack of Face ID. Unlike the iPad Pro, which unlocks with a simple tap, the Air relies on Touch ID, which can be awkward depending on how you hold the device. Adding Face ID would be a game-changing upgrade for the Air lineup.
Size Matters: 11-inch vs. 13-inch
Choosing between the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models depends on how you use the device.
- The 11-inch Air is lighter and easier to hold, making it a great portable option.
- The 13-inch Air is better suited as a desk-bound device, especially when paired with a keyboard.
If you’re looking for an iPad as a primary computer, the 13-inch iPad Pro might be a better choice. Its 120Hz screen, better keyboard, and superior performance justify the higher price. However, for a versatile and portable tablet, the 11-inch Air is a fantastic option.
The Apple Intelligence Factor
Apple Intelligence is the big unknown here. The iPad Air should support Apple’s AI features, but it remains to be seen how well they perform compared to the iPad Pro.
Final Verdict
The M3 iPad Air isn’t a massive upgrade but remains an excellent tablet. If you already own an M2 iPad Air, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade. However, if you’re buying a new iPad and don’t need the power of the Pro models, the Air is still the best balance of performance, price, and portability.
