How to use Google Wallet’s ID Pass for Airport security
Airport security can be a hassle, but one way to streamline the process is by using a digital ID instead of a physical one. If you’re an Android user, you can now add your passport to Google Wallet’s ID pass, which is officially accepted by TSA for domestic travel.
Benefits of a Digital Passport
Having a digital passport eliminates the need to carry a physical document while navigating airport security checkpoints. This is especially useful if you don’t have a REAL ID when the new requirements take effect on May 7, 2025.
However, it’s important to note that a digital passport doesn’t fully replace a physical one—you’ll still need the original document for international travel and other identification purposes outside TSA.
How to Add Your Passport to Google Wallet
- Open Google Wallet on your Android device.
- Tap the + icon, then select ID > ID pass.
- Click Get Started and follow the instructions.
- Scan your passport and face to complete the verification process.
The process takes a few minutes for approval. You can also add a state-issued ID (such as a driver’s license) by selecting ID > Driver’s license or state ID instead of ID pass.
Using Other Digital IDs for Travel
Currently, Google Wallet’s ID pass is the only digital passport accepted by TSA for domestic travel. However, state-issued IDs stored in Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, Samsung Wallet, or a state-specific mobile app can also be used for airport security screening in the following states:
✔ Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia.
With technology evolving, digital IDs are set to make travel more seamless and convenient in the future.
