Pakistan to address US tariffs with high-level delegation

Islamabad: Finance Minister (FM) Muhammad Aurangzeb announced that Pakistan has decided to send a high-level delegation to the United States (US) for talks following the US tariffs.

While chairing a press conference in Islamabad, FM Aurangzeb said that they are preparing a new package for talks with the US after the American tariffs.

Moreover, the US tariffs, a steering committee has been formed, a working group has been formed, which will soon be presented to the Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif.

He said that the delegation will discuss with the US administration the challenges and opportunities related to tariffs, which have significant impacts on Pakistan’s economy.

The federal minister stated that while tariffs present challenges, they also present opportunities for Pakistan.

However, he clarified that no special package is currently under consideration for the local industry regarding the US tariffs.

On Friday, it may be recalled that the PM formed a twelve-member steering committee to deal with the effects of the 29% US tariff.

The committee will conduct an in-depth review of the US tariffs on Pakistani goods and formulate a policy response.

The committee will also review the country’s export competitiveness, especially the textile sector.

Furthermore, the twelve-member committee includes the Minister of Finance, Minister of Commerce, Minister of Petroleum, Special Assistant on Industries, Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, former Ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other members.
