Kashmir leader Syed Ali Geelani’s Fifth Death Anniversary Being Observed
The fifth death anniversary of Kashmiri leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani is being observed on September 1, 2026, across Pakistan, particularly in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani was a prominent voice in the Kashmir freedom movement. He spent nearly seven decades advocating the right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir.
He was known for his strong belief in Pakistan and often raised the slogan, “We are Pakistanis, Pakistan belongs to us.” Despite years of detention and restrictions, he remained committed to his political views.
Geelani entered politics at a young age and later became an important figure in the political life of occupied Jammu and Kashmir. He served as a member of the legislative assembly in 1972, 1977 and 1987.
For the last 11 years of his life, he remained under house arrest at his home in Hyderpora, Srinagar. Despite restrictions and prolonged detention, he continued to speak for the right to self-determination.
Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away on September 1, 2021, while under house arrest. He was buried wrapped in the Pakistani flag.
