Sean King Cause of Death: West Perth star dead at 60
The football community is heartbroken following the loss of Sean King, a beloved former West Coast Eagles and West Perth player, who passed away at 60 after a courageous battle with cancer.
King, an inaugural member of the Eagles’ squad, died on Wednesday, just days after being celebrated with a lifetime membership by West Perth in a touching tribute last Sunday.
King’s football journey began with West Perth in 1986, where he played 60 games and kicked 48 goals over three seasons. His talent earned him a spot in the West Coast Eagles’ historic 1987 debut VFL season. Though he played just one senior game for the Eagles, it left a lasting mark—a final-round clash against St Kilda where he dazzled with 21 disposals and two goals, sealing a memorable victory. Fans still recall his standout performance, with one supporter reminiscing, “He played very well… unlucky not to get more games. Rest in peace.”
After leaving West Perth in 1989, King briefly joined East Perth in 1991 for 10 games before retiring. His passion for the game endured as he returned to West Perth as a league runner from 2002 to 2018, contributing to premiership wins in 2003 and 2013. Described as a “great bloke” with an “infectious personality,” he became a cherished figure among players, staff, and supporters.
West Perth’s emotional tribute highlighted his decades of dedication: “Sean’s impact on our club’s success and spirit is unforgettable. It was an honor to grant him life membership surrounded by loved ones.” The West Coast Eagles also shared condolences, praising his role in their inaugural squad and sending love to his family.
Teammates and friends flooded social media with grief and admiration. “Gone too soon—a champion on and off the field,” wrote one former colleague. Another echoed, “He taught so many young players the game. A true legend.”
King leaves behind his wife, Anita, and children Jordan, Hannah, and Tom, along with a legacy etched in WAFL and AFL history. His fight against cancer and the outpouring of tributes underscore the profound mark he left on Australian football.
