Noor Zaman wins U23 World Squash Championship title

Pakistan Squash twinkling youngster Noor Zaman has defeated Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey  in Under-23 World Squash Championship in a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory on Thursday.

The final, held at the elite DHA Creek Club in Karachi, was a display of resilience, determination, and skill by the 21-year-old from Peshawar, who overcame a difficult start to win the coveted title.

Zaman’s victory was a credit to his mental fortitude and adaptability. Despite being on the back foot, he showed great resilience to recover, eventually winning the title in front of a raucous home crowd. The final score of 11-6, 9-11, 4-11, 11-9, and 11-7 reflected the heated competition that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.

Speaking after the game, Zaman dedicated his triumph to the people of Pakistan, particularly the ardent supporters who backed him throughout the tournament. “This victory is for Pakistan.” The encouragement I’ve received has been incredible, and it’s motivated me to do my best on the court. “I’m proud to carry on Pakistan’s rich squash legacy,” Zaman stated.

Earlier,  Zaman has reached the final of the first-ever WSF World U23 Squash Championships after an impressive win over Malaysia’s Ameeshenraj Chandaran, beating him 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 at Karachi’s DHA Creek Club.

Zaman, the tournament’s second seed, will now face Egypt’s Kareem El Torkey in the final. El Torkey caused an upset by defeating top-seeded fellow Egyptian Ibrahim Elkabbani 7-11, 11-2, 11-8, 11-5 in the semi-final.

Zaman was already leading by two games when his opponent had to retire from the match. After the win, Zaman said, “The crowd support has been amazing. I’ll give my all to win this title for Pakistan.”

In the women’s event, Egypt’s top seed Fayrouz Abouelkheir beat Malaysia’s Aira Azman 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4. She will play in the final against Hong Kong’s Chan Sin Yuk, who defeated Malaysia’s Xin Ying Yee in a close five-game match.
