Butterbean wants a fight? Jake Paul’s six-word reply says it all

Butterbean wants a fight? Jake Paul’s savage six-word reply says it all
The boxing world was left stunned this week after Eric “Butterbean” Esch, the legendary super heavyweight knockout artist, revealed that social media star-turned-boxer Jake Paul turned down a potential fight between them.
The surprising rejection came despite Butterbean’s very public campaign to face “The Problem Child” in what would have been a fascinating generational clash.
Butterbean’s Comeback: From Health Struggles to Fighting Shape
At his peak, Butterbean was one of boxing’s most recognizable figures—a 5’11”, 515-pound powerhouse with a sledgehammer right hand. His brawling style earned him a cult following in the 1990s and early 2000s, with memorable fights against the likes of Larry Holmes and Johnny Knoxville.
But after retiring in 2013 with a record of 77-10-4 (58 KOs), Butterbean faced severe health struggles. At his heaviest, he could barely walk due to joint pain and breathing difficulties. Doctors warned him that his weight was life-threatening.
Then came the turnaround. Through sheer determination, the 58-year-old lost an astonishing 200 pounds, dropping to a leaner, healthier 315 lbs. Now mobile and training again, Butterbean has been vocal about wanting one final fight—and he set his sights on Jake Paul.
The Callout – And Paul’s Surprising Response
Butterbean first challenged Paul in late 2023 while the YouTuber was preparing for his high-profile bout with Mike Tyson (since postponed). The veteran even posted training videos, showing he still packed power in his punches.
But in a recent interview with Undisputed, Butterbean revealed that Paul privately turned him down after their fight.
“I spoke to Jake after the Tyson fight,” Esch said. “I asked him, ‘When are you gonna fight me?’ He just said, ‘I can’t—you’re a legend.’ I don’t get it. I’d fight Mike Tyson, and I’d love to fight Jake Paul.”
The response has sparked debate. Is Paul showing genuine respect for a boxing veteran? Or is he avoiding a risky fight against a heavy puncher, even at 58?
What’s Next for Butterbean? Wrestling Return & More
While a Paul fight seems unlikely, Butterbean isn’t done yet. This weekend, he makes his wrestling return at an independent event—coinciding with WWE’s WrestleMania.
“Look at me—I couldn’t walk, and now I’m back doing what I love,” he said. “If you believe in yourself, you can do anything. And wait till you see what’s next.”
Jake Paul’s Next Move: Anthony Joshua Talks?
Meanwhile, Paul is eyeing even bigger challenges. Last month, he shocked fans by calling out two-time heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Promoter Eddie Hearn didn’t dismiss the idea, telling reporters:
“If we were offered it? Why not? It’d be an easy night’s work for AJ.”
But Hearn also warned:
“Fighting Gervonta Davis or Canelo is one thing. Fighting AJ? You could get decapitated. This isn’t a game.”
