WhatsApp Rolls Out In-App Chat Translation Feature

WhatsApp to block some phones from chats within 24 hours
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, has begun testing a brand-new translation feature for chats and channels, now available to select Android users enrolled in its beta program. The chat translation feature, spotted by WABetaInfo, is currently live for those running version 2.25.12.25, with a wider rollout expected soon.
This in-app tool enables users to translate messages in languages like Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hindi, and Russian directly within the chat. A standout aspect of the update is that translations happen on-device, meaning it functions without needing an internet connection.
To use it, users must download language packs—either for individual languages or an all-in-one pack that detects and translates multiple languages automatically.
The translation toggle is located in the chat info screen and can be enabled for individual or group chats. Alternatively, users can long-press any message and tap the “Translate” option for manual translations.
While these on-device translations may not be as precise as those offered by cloud-based platforms, WhatsApp allows users to provide feedback to improve the tool. Importantly, all feedback is collected without sending message content to Meta, keeping user privacy intact.
For beta users who already have access, WhatsApp is encouraging them to test the feature and share their experiences to help enhance future versions.
