Millions of Americans will receive their Social Security payments this month. The Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out benefits to about 70 million people each month.
These payments include retirement, disability, survivor, and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.
When Will Social Security Payments Arrive in May?
The SSA follows a set schedule for payments. Here are the key dates for May 2025:
Thursday, May 1 – SSI payments (for elderly, blind, and disabled individuals with low income).
Friday, May 2 – Retirement benefits for those who started receiving checks before May 1997, and retirees who also get SSI.
Wednesday, May 14 – Retirement, spousal, and survivor benefits for people born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
Wednesday, May 21 – Benefits for those born between the 11th and 20th.
Wednesday, May 28 – Benefits for birthdays between the 21st and 31st.
Friday, May 30 – Early SSI payment for June (due to June 1 falling on a Sunday).
Why Two SSI Payments in May?
Usually, SSI is paid only once a month on the 1st. But if the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment moves to the last business day of the previous month.
In May, June 1 is a Sunday, so the June SSI payment will arrive early—on Friday, May 30. This means SSI recipients will get:
Their regular May payment on May 1
Their June payment on May 30
The SSA explains: “This is not an extra payment. It’s just the June payment arriving early. You don’t need to report it.”
What If Your Payment Is Late?
If your benefit doesn’t arrive on time, the SSA advises waiting three business days before contacting them. Weekends and holidays do not count as business days.
How Much Money Will You Get?
Social Security payments vary based on:
When you started claiming benefits
Your work history and earnings
The type of benefit you receive
Retirement Benefits (2025 Maximums)
Age 62 (early retirement) – Up to $2,831 per month
Full Retirement Age (67) – Up to $4,018 per month
Age 70 (delayed retirement) – Up to $5,108 per month

SSI Payments (2025 Maximums)
Individuals – Up to $967 per month
Couples – Up to $1,450 per month
Your actual SSI amount may be lower if you have other income.
Who Gets Social Security Payments?
The SSA sends money to:
Retirees – People who worked and paid Social Security taxes.
Disabled Workers – Those who can’t work due to a long-term disability.
Survivors – Family members of workers who passed away.
SSI Recipients – Low-income seniors, blind, or disabled individuals.
How Are Payments Sent?
Most people get their money through:
Direct deposit (fastest and safest)
Direct Express debit card (for those without bank accounts)
Paper check (rare, mostly for older recipients)
What Should You Do If There’s a Problem?
If your payment is missing or incorrect:
Wait 3 business days (in case of delays).
Check your bank account or mailbox.
Contact the SSA at 1-800-772-1213 or visit ssa gov
Final Reminder
Mark your calendar for your payment date. If you get SSI, remember you’ll receive two payments in May (May 1 and May 30), but the second one is actually your June benefit arriving early.
