Gerard Kennedy has died aged 93
The Australian entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its most celebrated stars.
Gerard Kennedy, the legendary actor whose career spanned over five decades, has died at the age of 93. A family friend confirmed the news in an emotional post on social media, calling Kennedy “an iconic Australian actor of many decades.”
Born in 1932, Gerard Kennedy became a household name through his unforgettable roles in classic Australian television. He was particularly remembered for his character Al, a terrorist in The Wentworth Siege episodes of Prisoner. But his acting legacy extended far beyond that.
Kennedy rose to fame with his portrayal of Detective Frank Banner in the long-running police drama Division 4, a role that made him one of the most recognized faces on Australian television in the 1970s. His performance earned him two consecutive Gold Logie Awards for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television in 1971 and 1972, along with three Penguin Awards over the years.
In addition to Division 4, Gerard featured in numerous hit shows such as Underbelly, A Country Practice, Blue Heelers, The Flying Doctors, and Neighbours. On the big screen, he appeared in movies like Wolf Creek 2 (2013) and portrayed Vince Colosimo in the series Fat Tony and Co.
Kennedy’s acting debut came in 1967 as the villain Kragg in the TV series Hunter. He was so popular that after the lead actor left, writers transformed his role into that of a hero.
His final acting credit came in 2015, when he appeared in two episodes of Glitch on ABC. After that, he stepped away from the spotlight but remained a beloved figure in the industry and among fans.
Following the news of his death, many former co-stars and fans paid tribute. Actress Liz Burch, his co-star from The Flying Doctors, shared a heartfelt message, simply writing: “Vale Gerard.”
Fans flooded social media with tributes, remembering Kennedy not just for his roles, but for the golden era of Australian television that he helped define.
One user wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “R.I.P. Gerard Kennedy (1932–2025). Thanks for the memories. My deepest sympathy and sincerest condolences to his family and friends.”
Another fan recalled his most iconic role: “Sorry to hear of the passing of Gerard Kennedy. I can still hear that dramatic theme of Division 4 and picture Frank Banner looking at his watch. Gee they were great shows back then.”
A third tribute read: “Incredible innings at 93, incredible actor. Thanks for the memories Gerard Kennedy. RIP.”
Gerard Kennedy is survived by his daughter, Chrisanya. His legacy lives on in the timeless characters he brought to life and the countless fans he touched throughout his career.
