Philippine bakery owner kills workers claiming he was being 'ganged up on'
A Philippine bakery owner brutally killed seven of his colleagues during a birthday celebration at his bakery in Rizal, claiming he was being “ganged up on” by the workers.
The tragic incident occurred after the workers, who had organized the party for the bakery owner, were drinking alcohol. According to the suspect, whose identity has not been released, he killed the men one by one while they were intoxicated, after allegedly overhearing them plotting to smother him while he slept.
On April 22, a local villager called the police after hearing one of the bakers cry for help. Authorities arrived at the scene to find the victims’ bodies lying in pools of blood, each with multiple stab wounds. One victim was still breathing but later died from his injuries on the way to the hospital.
The Rizal Police Provincial Office reported: “Upon arrival, seven male individuals were found inside the bakery. Initial findings suggest the victims were employees of J&B Malunggay Bakery and had been residing in the bakery premises. It appears they were attacked while asleep.”
The Philippine bakery owner who killed his workers turned himself in to the police at 9 a.m., two hours after the discovery of the bodies. He explained his actions by stating, “I surrendered because I have nowhere to go. If I leave, they will still catch me. After leaving the bakery, I headed to the Philippine National Police headquarters Crame.”
He claimed the massacre was sparked by a conflict with one of his business partners, who was also among the victims. The bakery owner alleged, “I overheard them planning to smother me to death with a pillow while I was sleeping. They wanted it to look like I died from a nightmare when my wife arrived the next day.”
The suspect also explained that he acted in self-defense, stating that the workers were intoxicated and fighting in the dark. He added that there were only two partners at the bakery, and the others were his business partner’s relatives. “If I died, the entire business would go to him, so I decided to act first,” he said.
However, the police believe the bakery owner may not have acted alone. Police Colonel Felipe Maraggun, the provincial police director, stated: “We are not satisfied with his version of events. It’s possible he had an accomplice, and we are investigating that possibility. We will continue to gather evidence.”
As the investigation continues, the victims’ bodies are undergoing post-mortem examinations, and the police are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to piece together the full details of the incident.
