TV and gospel personality Lulu Roman has died at the age of 78, her son Damon has confirmed. Best known for her long-standing role on the country variety show Hee Haw, Lulu passed away just seven months after relocating to Washington to be with her son. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Lulu Roman, born Bertha Louise Hable, became a household name through her appearances on Hee Haw from 1969 to 1992. She featured in over 150 episodes and was often introduced as “the fat girl” — a label she embraced with humor but also acknowledged as part of a stereotyped role. In a 2024 interview, she candidly said: “They needed one fat dumb woman, and Buck Owens said, ‘I got your girl!’”
Beyond comedy, Lulu was also a talented gospel singer who overcame a turbulent early life, including struggles with addiction. Her publicist Ben Laurro honored her legacy, saying, “Lulu Roman was unsung. She endured much adversity in her life that helped her become a joy to others.”
Fans and peers alike are remembering her as a woman who brought laughter and warmth to millions, while quietly enduring personal trials with grace.
