John Moe is arrested for predicting devastating Myanmar earthquake

25 April, 2025 13:49

A well-known TikTok astrologer in Myanmar has been arrested after predicting a powerful earthquake would soon hit the country. His prediction came just weeks after a deadly quake killed more than 3,700 people.

The 21-year-old John Moe The, who had over 300,000 followers on TikTok, shared a video on April 9 warning that a very strong earthquake would strike every city in Myanmar within 12 days.

In his video, he advised people not to stay in tall buildings and to carry their important belongings. His warning clip quickly went viral, gaining 3.3 million views.

But this prediction led to trouble.

Arrested for Causing Panic

John Moe The was arrested during a morning raid at his home in Monywa, a city in central Myanmar. The arrest was confirmed by the country’s military government.

Officials said they received a tip-off about “fake news” being spread online, and they accused the TikTok user of causing public panic.

“A strong earthquake will hit soon – don’t stay in buildings,” his viral message had warned.

In a government statement, authorities said: “Action will be taken effectively against him according to the law. We will also take action against anyone who shares or spreads fake news.”

His Predictions and TikTok Fame

John Moe The was popular on TikTok under the name “John (Palmistry)”, where he posted astrology and cosmic predictions. He often added text predictions over galaxy-like backgrounds. His topics included:

  • Future earthquakes

  • The release of Aung San Suu Kyi

  • Predictions about American airstrikes in Myanmar

After his arrest, his TikTok account was taken down.

Real Earthquake Already Shook the Nation

Just a month before his prediction, a 7.77 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar’s central region. It killed more than 3,700 people and left over 60,000 homeless, according to the United Nations.

The quake damaged roads, power lines, and communication systems. It also affected Thailand, where a building under construction collapsed, trapping dozens. Tremors were even felt in India and China.

Scientists: Earthquake Predictions Are Not Possible

Although early warning systems can alert people once an earthquake begins, experts say predicting earthquakes before they happen is not scientifically possible.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) states clearly: “Neither the USGS nor any other scientists have ever predicted a major earthquake. We do not know how.”

Despite his fame, John Moe The’s arrest raises questions about free speech, social media laws, and the spread of misinformation in countries like Myanmar.
