Mansfield Town striker Lucas Akins has been jailed for 14 months for causing the death of cyclist Adrian Daniel, 33, in a tragic crash in Netherton, West Yorkshire, on March 17, 2022. The court heard that Akins, 36, failed to stop at a give-way sign before pulling out of a T-junction, striking Mr Daniel, who suffered a catastrophic head injury and died 10 days later.
Mr Daniel, a keen cyclist and quality controller at a tech firm, had married his wife Savanna just seven months before the accident. She located him unconscious in the road via his Garmin GPS and described the past three years as “hell,” blaming Akins for prolonging the trauma through delays in his guilty plea.
Akins pleaded guilty to causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving and was also handed a two-year driving ban. Despite the gravity of the case, Akins played for Mansfield just hours after entering his guilty plea, prompting public backlash.
In court, Judge Alex Menary emphasized that the fatal collision could have been avoided if Akins had been keeping a proper lookout. The footballer’s defense cited a “momentary lapse” and personal difficulties at the time. The judge acknowledged Akins’ remorse but deemed immediate custody appropriate.
Mr Daniel’s wife, who has since quit her job and is undergoing therapy, said, “No justice will ever bring Adrian back, but today marks an end to this long ordeal.”
Mansfield Town FC issued a statement offering condolences and said it is “considering its position” regarding Akins.
