Man Arrested in Death of Ice Hockey Star Adam Johnson Will Not Face Criminal Charges

29 April, 2025 17:04

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) announced that no criminal charges will be filed against a professional ice hockey player linked to the death of Adam Johnson during a match in October 2023. Johnson, a 29-year-old American athlete, died after a collision on the ice while playing for the Nottingham Panthers against the Sheffield Steelers.

What Happened During the Match?
The tragic incident occurred on October 28, 2023, during an Elite League Challenge Cup game at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena. Johnson, a centre for the Nottingham Panthers, suffered a fatal neck injury in the 35th minute of the game. He collided with an opponent during play, causing severe bleeding. Players quickly formed a circle around Johnson as paramedics rushed onto the ice. He was taken to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after.

Police Investigation and CPS Decision
South Yorkshire Police began a manslaughter investigation after the incident. A man, believed to be the opposing player involved in the collision, was arrested. However, after reviewing evidence, the CPS stated there was “no realistic prospect of conviction” for any crime.

Michael Quinn, a senior CPS official, said: “This was a deeply upsetting event. We worked closely with police to decide if charges were needed. After careful review, we found no grounds for prosecution. Our thoughts are with Adam’s family.”

Reaction to the Tragedy
The accident shocked fans watching live at the arena and online. Videos of the collision spread widely, raising questions about safety in ice hockey. Johnson’s team, the Nottingham Panthers, retired his number 47 jersey to honor him. His death also sparked debates about making neck guards mandatory for players. Currently, such protection is not required in many leagues.

Why No Charges Were Filed
Legal experts suggest proving criminal intent in sports collisions is extremely difficult. Ice hockey is a high-speed contact sport where accidents can happen despite rules. The CPS likely concluded the collision was a tragic accident, not a deliberate act.

What Happens Next?
Johnson’s family may still pursue civil action, but criminal charges are off the table. The ice hockey community continues to push for better safety measures. Some leagues have already started encouraging players to wear neck guards.
