Jeremy Vine Stops Cycling Videos After Online Death Threats, Abuse

30 April, 2025 16:32

TV presenter Jeremy Vine has announced he is stepping back from posting his well-known cycling commute videos, citing relentless online abuse and serious threats to his safety.

For more than a decade, the 59-year-old broadcaster has used social media to highlight road safety by sharing clips of his daily bike rides through London. These videos often featured close passes and dangerous driving, with Vine using the footage to raise awareness about the risks cyclists face. But now, after receiving death threats and facing a barrage of hostility, he’s calling time on the project.

“It wore me down,” Vine told Metro in an exclusive interview. “I can’t work out why people are driven so crazy online by this stuff.”

Despite the videos racking up over 100 million views, Vine said the level of anger they stirred online had taken a toll on him personally. He’s currently dealing with two separate death threats, which are under police investigation.

“Even if you look at the replies to me saying I’m going to stop, there were replies saying, ‘I wish you would keep going because we want to see you get run over.’ It’s really bizarre,” he added.

He reflected on the contrast between real-life interactions and those online:
“It is amazing to me that the anger online is greater than the anger on the roads.”

Jeremy Vine said a mix of factors influenced his decision to stop sharing the videos – including burnout, a stolen bike, and a new book project.
“To be honest, it wore me down. Secondly, I’ve got this book now, so I’d rather be talking about Agatha Christie and cosy crime than getting into arguments on the road.”

The veteran journalist has been vocal about the dangers cyclists face, particularly in busy cities like London. He believes many drivers still cling to the idea that they have more right to road space than cyclists.
“Drivers are really reluctant to give up their right to road space. There is the whole thing about they pay taxes and cyclists don’t. In the end, there is just an assumption that the roads belong to drivers – and if you challenge that in any way, they lose their s*.”**

He also pointed out the importance of viewing the roads from different perspectives.
“I thought it was really helpful for people, even if they drive, to see what it’s like to use the roads from the perspective of cyclists.”

While Vine plans to stop posting videos publicly, he isn’t giving up on cycling or road safety. He says he’ll continue to report reckless driving via the police’s online portal, praising both the platform and individuals like YouTuber Cycling Mikey, who documents drivers using mobile phones behind the wheel.

“The biggest single thing that has helped road safety in London is that if you drive around on a mobile, within a few hours you’ll definitely be seen and reported,” he said.

Despite everything, Vine’s passion for cycling remains strong.
“I’m not going to stop cycling – it’s what keeps me sane and happy. When I get back on two wheels again, I’m going to be a bit more private,” he said, adding with a hint of humour, “The trolls are already missing me, I can tell. They’ve started getting at each other now.”

For Jeremy Vine, the issue goes beyond his own safety. He emphasized that cyclists are vulnerable road users with families and lives worth protecting.
“People on bicycles are just a bag of blood – we have value. I’m a father of two girls, so I want to be able to cycle safely so I can see them in the evenings. And I do want them to be able to cycle safely as well.”

As he takes a step back from the spotlight, Vine hopes the conversations his videos sparked will continue to make London’s streets safer for everyone.
