Indian Sikh Singer’s Zara Gill Pro-Pakistan Song Banned by Modi Government
A heartfelt song praising Pakistan, sung by Indian Punjabi singer Zara Gill, has sparked controversy and a ban in India’s eastern Punjab. Titled “Asi Murdabad Nhi Keh Sakde Pakistan Nu” (We Cannot Say “Death to Pakistan”), the song celebrates cross-border cultural ties and criticizes anti-Pakistan slogans. Despite the ban, the track has gone viral on YouTube and social media platforms, winning hearts on both sides of the border.
The song begins with the powerful line: “We cannot say ‘Murda Baad’ Pakistan, even by mistake.” It creatively links love for Pakistan to the teachings of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, who spent part of his life in regions that are now part of modern-day Pakistan. The lyrics ask: “How can we curse the land where Guru Nanak lived?”
Zara Gill, a Sikh artist from Indian Punjab, uses soft melodies and traditional instruments to highlight shared spiritual and cultural roots. The video shows visuals of Sikh holy sites in Pakistan, such as Kartarpur Sahib, and emphasizes peace over hatred.
The Modi government banned the song in eastern Punjab (India) last week, calling it “divisive” and a threat to national unity. Indian authorities claim the song undermines the official stance on Pakistan, especially amid ongoing political tensions. However, fans argue the ban reflects intolerance toward artistic expression.
On social media, hashtags like #LetZaraSing and #PakistanZindabad are trending. Many users, including Indians, praise the song for promoting humanity over politics.
“This song reminds us that borders can’t divide shared heritage,” wrote a user from Lahore. A Sikh user in India commented: “Guru Nanak’s message is universal. Why punish art for preaching peace?”
