Texas Detainees Create Giant SOS Message at Detention Facility
A group of immigration detainees at the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Anson, Texas were seen forming an SOS distress signal in an open dirt field, as captured in newly released drone footage.
According to Reuters, the video shows 31 male detainees dressed in red and orange jumpsuits standing together to spell out the letters “SOS”—the internationally recognized distress call. The footage also shows some of the men waving toward the drone above, and one of them flashing a peace sign before taking their positions in the formation.
The Bluebonnet Detention Facility, operated under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is located approximately 200 miles west of Dallas. The purpose behind the detainees’ signal has not been officially confirmed, but the visual plea has sparked concern and renewed criticism about the conditions within immigration detention centers.
This action appears to be a public cry for help, and has drawn attention from immigrant rights groups, who are urging further investigation into the well-being and treatment of detainees at the facility.
The incident is gaining attention as advocates continue to raise alarms over issues including overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and prolonged detentions within ICE facilities across the country.
ICE has not yet issued an official statement regarding the footage or the conditions at Bluebonnet.
