George Clooney’s wife Amal Clooney faces possible US ban from Trump

01 May, 2025 14:51

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney may be barred from entering the United States due to her involvement in International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations into alleged war crimes by Israel, according to multiple reports.

The UK’s Foreign Office has reportedly warned Clooney that she could be subject to U.S. sanctions, including a travel ban and asset freeze, under a controversial executive order originally signed by former President Donald Trump. The order targets legal experts and ICC officials involved in cases that the U.S. deems politically motivated—specifically those related to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Although Clooney and her husband George Clooney primarily live in Britain and Italy, they also own property in the U.S., where George is currently acting on Broadway. The possibility of Amal being banned from entering the country is growing more serious as the fallout from the ICC’s investigations intensifies.

“She could be caught up in this sweeping order simply for doing her job,” a legal source told the media.

Amal Clooney, 47, served as an adviser to ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan, supporting the legal case that led to arrest warrants for top Israeli officials.

In a statement, Clooney defended her role, saying: “This wasn’t about politics – it was about the law. I served on this panel because I believe in the rule of law and the need to protect civilian lives.”

Other British legal experts such as Baroness Helena Kennedy and Lord Justice Adrian Fulford have also reportedly been warned about potential U.S. action. Sanctions have already been imposed on Karim Khan and his family, marking a dramatic escalation in the legal standoff between the U.S. and the ICC.

The Trump-era executive order, revived earlier this year, threatens “tangible and significant consequences” for anyone aiding ICC investigations deemed hostile to U.S. allies. The U.S. government maintains that the ICC’s probe into Israeli leaders is illegitimate and biased.

Tensions between the Clooneys and Trump go back years. In 2024, Trump publicly mocked George Clooney, calling him a “second-rate actor” after the star criticized President Biden’s re-election campaign.

Amal Clooney, born in Lebanon during the civil war and raised in the UK, is a dual-qualified lawyer in the US and UK. She has built a career advocating for victims of war crimes, including Yazidi genocide survivors and jailed journalists. In 2024, she was named International Lawyer of the Year by The Legal 500.

Despite criticism over her involvement in the Israel-Gaza conflict, Amal has stayed firm in her stance. “The laws of war apply to every country, regardless of the reasons for a conflict,” she said last year.

If the U.S. expands its sanctions, Clooney could find herself added to a growing list of UK-based lawyers facing travel bans and asset restrictions, a move that would be seen as a serious challenge to international legal independence.
