Microsoft to Shut Down Skype by May 2025: Users Encouraged to Transition to Teams
Microsoft has officially announced that it will discontinue its long-standing video-calling service, Skype, on May 5, 2025.
Skype, which was launched in 2003, quickly became a popular tool for video and voice communication globally. However, with the rise of competing platforms like WhatsApp, Zoom, and FaceTime, Skype’s popularity steadily declined over the past decade.
In a blog post, Microsoft stated that the decision to retire Skype is part of its plan to simplify and modernize its communication services. The company said, “In order to streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs, we will be retiring Skype in May 2025 to focus on Microsoft Teams (free), our modern communications and collaboration hub.”
Moving to Microsoft Teams
Microsoft assured users that moving from Skype to Microsoft Teams will be a smooth process. Many of Skype’s core features—like one-on-one and group video calls, messaging, and file sharing—are also available in Teams. But Teams offers more advanced tools as well. These include meeting hosting, calendar integration, and community building features, all for free.
The company also highlighted the rapid growth of Teams usage, noting that in the last two years, the number of minutes spent in meetings by everyday users has quadrupled. This, according to Microsoft, shows the increasing value that Teams brings to daily communication.
Easy Sign-In with Skype Credentials
For current Skype users, Microsoft has made the transition easy. Users can sign in to Microsoft Teams using their existing Skype usernames and passwords. This will allow them to keep their chat history, contacts, and call records. Users who do not wish to switch can still choose to export their Skype data, including messages, contact lists, and call logs.
Paid Skype Services and Features
Microsoft also addressed the status of paid Skype services. From now on, new users will no longer be able to purchase Skype Credit or calling subscriptions. However, existing users can still use their remaining credits and subscriptions through Microsoft Teams. Additionally, features like the Skype Dial Pad will still be accessible via the Skype web portal or directly within Teams.
Farewell to a Communication Icon
Microsoft expressed deep appreciation to users who supported Skype for more than two decades. “Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications and supporting countless meaningful moments,” the company said. “We’re honoured to have been part of the journey. We’re excited about the new opportunities that Teams brings and are committed to helping you stay connected in new and meaningful ways.”
Skype’s retirement marks the end of an era in digital communication. While the platform may be shutting down, its impact on how the world connects will be remembered for years to come.
