UN warns of imminent famine in Gaza

13 May, 2025 11:43

A new report by the United Nations (UN) has issued a grave warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, revealing that over half a million people are currently experiencing extreme hunger.

The report cautions that, if conditions persist, the region faces a real threat of famine by the end of September.

The findings, published by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)—a global authority on food insecurity—highlight a sharp deterioration in Gaza’s conditions since October 2023. According to the report, the entire population of 2.1 million people is grappling with severe food shortages.

The IPC analysis further reveals that more than 469,000 individuals are enduring what it classifies as “catastrophic” hunger—the highest level of food insecurity. The report raises serious health concerns, projecting that over 71,000 children are at risk of malnutrition, and at least 14,000 could develop severe acute malnutrition if immediate interventions are not made.

Since March 2025, Gaza has been under a near-total Israeli blockade, cutting off both humanitarian aid and commercial goods. As a result, already dire living conditions have further deteriorated, pushing the region dangerously close to full-scale famine.
