Fitness Trainer Hannah Barry Goes Viral for Sharing Her Real Weight and Faces Online Backlash

Woman Fitness Trainer Shares Her Weight Online—Shocked by Men's Response
A fitness trainer Hannah Barry from London has sparked huge online discussion after sharing her real weight on Instagram.
Hannah Barry, 28, who goes by @hannahbarryuk on social media, recently posted a video revealing she is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs about 85 kilograms (187 pounds). Her weight sometimes drops to 83 kilograms (183 pounds), but usually stays in that range.
Despite being fit and muscular, her Body Mass Index (BMI) labels her as obese. The video, which aimed to encourage women to stop obsessing over the scale, quickly went viral—earning over 5.4 million views and nearly 100,000 likes.
“Your Weight Doesn’t Define You”
In the video, Hannah explained why she talks so much about body weight. She said that growing up taller than most girls, she often felt pressure to be smaller.
“There’s so much pressure on women to shrink themselves,” she said. “When you stop trying to be as small as possible, everything changes.”
Hannah also pointed out a common misunderstanding: muscle and fat weigh the same, but muscle is denser, so it takes up less space in the body.
She added that the number on the scale doesn’t always reflect health or happiness.
BMI: A Broken System?
Hannah criticized the BMI system, calling it outdated. She shared how even during her battle with an eating disorder, her BMI still showed “healthy,” which she says proves the index doesn’t consider things like muscle mass or fat distribution.
“It’s just not a helpful tool for everyone,” she said.
Strong Backlash From Men
Despite her honest message, not everyone responded kindly. Many men online accused her of lying about her weight.
“I’ve had thousands of messages from men saying I must be lying. But why would I lie?” she asked. “It shows how unrealistic people’s views on weight are.”
Expert Supports Her View
Dr. Bronwyn Mahtani, a medical doctor who specializes in metabolic health, agreed with Hannah.
“BMI was never meant to judge individual health,” said Dr. Mahtani. “It doesn’t separate fat from muscle. So, two people can have the same BMI but very different health conditions.”
Dr. Mahtani added that true health involves many things: like muscle mass, hormone balance, energy levels, and even mental well-being.
Instagram Users Show Support
Many people, especially women, showed strong support in the comments.
“OMG, thank you! I needed this today,” one woman wrote.
“I’m 174 cm and 95 kg. Muscle is underrated!” added another.
“People really out here gaslighting you about your own weight?!” a user named Emily commented.
Hannah’s message is clear: Don’t let numbers on a scale decide your worth. Focus on feeling strong, happy, and healthy instead.
