Unbearable load shedding: Karachi’s power woes continue

14 May, 2025 22:27

This is the reference to the editorial (May 14) on the problem of the energy crisis in Pakistan, especially in Karachi, which creates unthinkable suffering for the public . Regardless of being a hub activity for the economic sector of Pakistan, Karachi keeps experiencing long periods of power blackout, impacting lifestyle , business life, and even basic services.

The condition breaks down in the summer season, with load shedding extending for as long as 10–12 hours daily  in certain regions.  Not only does this interfere with household activities, but it also causes significant losses to small industries and shopkeepers who are dependent on electricity.

Additionally , the unstable power supply places an intolerable burden on students , hospital patients, and working-class professionals.

It is a sad fact that while people are made to pay heavy electricity bills, they are not to get basic services. The lack of investment in power infrastructure, poor management, electricity theft, and circular debt  continue to cripple the energy sector.

I appeal to  the government and relevant authorities to implement immediate and sustainable measures to enhance power generation and distribution. Investment in renewable energy, elimination of electricity theft, effective regulation of power companies, and planting of solar systems are key to solving this crisis.
