Tragic Crash Claims Life of Gareth Davies as Driver Dale Groves Sentenced for Careless Driving

17 May, 2025 15:04

A devastating road accident has left a family heartbroken after 43-year-old Gareth Davies lost his life in a crash caused by a careless overtaking manoeuvre.

The incident happened in April 2023, when Dale Groves, 30, was driving a white Ford Ka and attempted to overtake a slow-moving lorry near a busy junction.

As Groves pulled out to overtake, he collided with Mr Davies’ Renault Clio, who was in the process of turning right into the Biffa landfill site. The impact of the crash was severe. Mr Davies was gravely injured and sadly died at the scene around 45 minutes later, despite repeated emergency calls and urgent medical efforts.

Gareth’s Final Words to His Wife

Mr Davies’ wife, Sharon, rushed to the scene after being contacted by one of Gareth’s colleagues who witnessed the crash. She found Gareth still conscious and in pain. In an emotional moment, Gareth managed to say, “I can’t babe, I’m sorry,” before he lost consciousness.

Sharon described the horrific scene, saying there were emergency vehicles everywhere. Firefighters and medics worked desperately to save him, but sadly, a doctor and police officer later confirmed he had passed away.

Court Proceedings and Sentencing

At Cardiff Crown Court, Groves admitted to causing death by careless/inconsiderate driving. He was cleared of the more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving. Prosecutor Ieuan Bennett told the court that Groves was likely too close to another vehicle and driving at speed when he made the fatal decision to overtake.

After the crash, Groves called an ambulance three times and attempted to help, but it was too late. He was described as remorseful, with no presence of alcohol, drugs, or extreme speeding at the time.

Heartbreaking Victim Statement

In a moving statement read in court, Sharon Davies said:

“The driver used the phrase ‘massive mistake’. His massive mistake has destroyed our family. Gareth’s life was taken, and ours were ruined. Our lives are unrecognisable.”

She spoke about the trauma of finding her husband in pain, the panic as he stopped responding, and the overwhelming grief when she was told he was gone.

The Verdict

Judge Daniel Williams described Gareth as a “loving and loyal man” and a proud father who was deeply devoted to his family and community. He said Gareth’s absence would forever cast a shadow over family celebrations.

Groves was sentenced to 10 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered to perform 250 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for five years.
