Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz is set to inaugurate the much-anticipated Yellow Line Train Project in Lahore later this year, according to media reports on Saturday. The project aims to revolutionize the city’s public transport system, offering a fast, efficient, and eco-friendly travel option for residents.
Project Timeline and Scope
Feasibility Report: Near completion
Construction Start Date: September 2025
Completion Date: June 2026
Route Length: 24 kilometers
Route: From Jinnah Bus Terminal to Harbanspura, running along both sides of Canal Road
The Yellow Line Transit Project is designed to significantly improve urban mobility. Once operational, it will cater to around 130,000 passengers daily, reducing traffic congestion and travel times across the city.
Infrastructure and Cost
The project will feature:
18 modern smart stations
A fleet of 30 electric trains, to be imported from China—the same models already in service in China and the United Arab Emirates
An estimated cost between Rs60 billion to Rs80 billion
Budget and Approvals
The project will be included in the upcoming annual development budget. Although Maryam Nawaz has already granted initial approval, final approval from the Punjab Cabinet is still pending. Once cleared, the plan will be submitted to ECNEC (Executive Committee of the National Economic Council) for final approval.
