Seven years ago, on May 19, 2018, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were married at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The world watched as the American actress became the Duchess of Sussex, joining the British Royal Family in a ceremony filled with tradition, love, and emotional moments.
After the televised wedding, the celebrations continued with a lunchtime reception, followed by an evening party at Frogmore House, hosted by King Charles (then Prince of Wales). Guests enjoyed themed cocktails like When Harry Met Meghan, along with fun snacks like candyfloss and burgers.
But one of the most unforgettable moments came during the evening when Meghan broke tradition and gave a wedding speech. Unlike typical royal brides, Meghan addressed the guests alongside Harry. Her words were heartfelt, humorous, and deeply personal.
In her speech, Meghan said she had “found her prince” and thanked Charles for walking her down the aisle. She also honored the late Queen Elizabeth II. But what stood out most was how she opened up about her love story with Harry, sharing how they met in London on July 3, 2016, and how their bond quickly grew.
She described their relationship as a “modern fairytale,” one filled with laughter, travel, and support through life’s challenges. The speech, according to guests, left many in silence, moved by her honest and poetic words.
Years later, Meghan revealed more about that special speech in the couple’s Netflix documentary series released in 2022. Reading from her phone, she recited lines that captured the depth of their love and her hope for the future: “For this love, she was a fighter… Life begins now. And above all, love wins.”
Her speech also hinted at the struggles she faced behind palace walls. In the book Finding Freedom, authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand said Meghan’s speech was symbolic — a sign she had finally found a safe space to use her voice again.
Later, in her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan compared her experience to The Little Mermaid, saying she “lost her voice” after marrying into royalty — but eventually, she got it back.
Even now, Meghan’s speech is remembered as a turning point. It was a moment of honesty, love, and power — one that reminded the world that real fairy tales are not just about castles, but about courage and connection.
