Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice Chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi has been discharged from the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) in Lahore after an eight-day stay.
Qureshi had been admitted due to chest pain, prompting medical evaluation and multiple diagnostic tests. According to his lawyer, Rana Mudassir, “Qureshi was shifted to hospital following Fajr prayers” on May 17 after experiencing discomfort in jail.
“Following his discharge, a heavy police contingent escorted the former foreign minister from the hospital to jail.” Rana Mudassir further confirmed that Qureshi’s family was kept informed about his condition by the jail administration.
Previously, Qureshi underwent an initial check-up by jail doctors before being transferred to the hospital for comprehensive medical tests.
Meanwhile, legal proceedings against Qureshi continue. “An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi indicted former foreign minister Shah Mehmood, Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (CM KP) Ali Amin Gandapur, and other PTI leaders in the GHQ attack case.” The case involves 14 other PTI members facing similar charges.
However, there has been some legal relief for the party leaders. “The Islamabad High Court (IHC) acquitted former prime minister Imran Khan and PTI leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi in cipher case.” The IHC’s decision was announced by Chief Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb.
It is notable that Qureshi and PTI founder Imran Khan were earlier sentenced to 10 years each in the cipher case in January of the previous year.
