Mother’s bold act: Returning escaped son following Malir Jail earthquake breakout

A dramatic jailbreak happened recently at Malir Jail in Karachi, where more than 200 prisoners escaped during an earthquake. But among the chaos, a touching story of honesty and courage came to light.

On Monday night, a strong earthquake shook Karachi. To keep prisoners safe, jail staff took them out of their rooms. But the situation quickly turned dangerous.

Some prisoners took advantage of the confusion, fought the guards, grabbed weapons, and opened fire. During this chaos, the main gate was broken, and over 200 inmates escaped.

Karachi’s DIG Jails, Muhammad Hassan Sahto, said the prisoners damaged the jail and hurt officers. Police fired shots in the air to control the situation, but many prisoners had already fled.

While police began a large search to catch the escaped inmates, one prisoner made a surprising choice. He ran home but didn’t stay free for long. His mother, a widow, was shocked to see him return. Instead of helping him hide, she convinced him to go back to jail.

She personally took her son back to the jail and handed him over to the police. She begged the officers to treat him kindly and apologized, saying her son made a mistake out of fear. She explained he was jailed because of a photo on his phone linking him to a friend involved in a crime. Despite being her only support, she said, “Right is right. I could not let him live as a fugitive.”

Her honest act impressed many people and was praised on social media for showing strong values during tough times.

Security at Malir Jail has been increased, and police are searching the area. So far, 78 out of the 213 escaped prisoners have been caught. This mother’s brave decision reminds us that even in hard times, integrity matters.
