32 earthquakes recorded in Karachi since June 1 2025

06 June, 2025 14:54

Since June 1, 2025, Karachi has experienced a noticeable increase in seismic activity, with 32 minor earthquakes recorded so far. According to Chief Meteorologist Amir Haider Laghari, these tremors are linked to the reactivation of the Landhi Fault Line, which had remained quiet for decades.

Why Are Earthquakes Happening in Karachi?

All recent tremors were mild, ranging between 1.5 and 3.6 on the Richter scale. Laghari explained that the Landhi Fault Line is currently going through a normalization phase. This means underground pressure is slowly being released, causing small, shallow tremors.

These minor earthquakes are not dangerous, but they are more easily felt because of their shallow depth—some as close as 2 kilometers below the surface.

Are Buildings at Risk?

Laghari said there is no immediate danger, but he advised that buildings located on or near fault lines should be built to withstand tremors up to 6.0 magnitude.

He also mentioned that cracks seen in houses recently are probably due to poor construction, not earthquake damage.

Areas Affected by Tremors

The small quakes have been felt in the following areas:

  • Quaidabad

  • Gadap

  • Malir

  • Korangi

  • DHA (Defence Housing Authority)

The latest tremor occurred at 8:32 a.m. on Friday, with a magnitude of 1.5. Earlier the same day, two more earthquakes were recorded near Defense and Malir, with magnitudes up to 2.7.

Should Karachi Residents Be Worried?

Experts say no—these tremors are normal and expected to continue for a few more days. The important thing is to stay alert, make sure buildings are safe, and follow guidance from local authorities if needed.
