Meta AI app sparks backlash after users’ private chats go public

16 June, 2025 20:40

Meta’s latest AI app, launched with much excitement, has now sparked serious privacy concerns. Many users were shocked to discover that their private conversations with the AI assistant were being made public — and they didn’t even realize it.

The app lets users chat with Meta AI using text, voice, and images. But the issue began when people unknowingly started posting these chats publicly. Those using the app through their Instagram accounts with public settings were especially at risk, as their conversations were automatically visible to others.

Some of the shared chats included very sensitive topics, such as legal troubles, tax questions, health symptoms — even full names and personal details. In one odd case, a user asked for dating advice in an audio post without knowing it was public.

The situation became even more bizarre when AI-generated images and strange imaginary stories — like Mark Zuckerberg being pregnant or marrying a giant bug — flooded the app, giving it a meme-like feel.

Cybersecurity experts, including Rachel Tobac, have raised alarms. They’ve found several examples of users exposing personal information without any warning, blaming the lack of clear privacy settings and guidelines.

Privacy advocates are calling on Meta to fix the issue by making the app’s public-sharing rules more transparent and giving users better control over their data. Until then, users are advised to be extra cautious when using the AI app — especially if connected through public Instagram profiles.
