Who is Deepika Luthra? Indian Influencer Deletes Instagram After Threats Linked to Murder Case

19 June, 2025 13:52

Social media influencer Deepika Luthra from Amritsar has deactivated her Instagram account following threats allegedly linked to the murder of fellow influencer Kanchan Kumari in Bathinda.

According to the reports, the threats came from Amritpal Singh Mehron, the main accused in the murder case, as well as fringe groups critical of Luthra’s online content.

Despite increased police security at her residence, Luthra cited ongoing intimidation as the reason for stepping back from the platform. Amritsar Police have arrested one individual in connection with the threats, while the search continues for Mehron, who allegedly fled to the UAE with two accomplices after Kumari’s murder, according to SSP Bathinda Avneet Kondal.

The incident has sparked concern across Punjab’s influencer community, with several content creators reportedly receiving similar threats in the wake of Kumari’s killing.

Responding to the developments, Punjab Aam Aadmi Party president and state minister Aman Arora urged the public not to panic. Speaking to India Today, Arora said, “Nobody needs to get scared like this in Punjab. The state police is very much active and alert to take action against such self-styled social vigilantes.” He also advised influencers to exercise responsibility in their content.

In Punjab’s Bathinda district, social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, known as “Kamal Kaur Bhabhi,” was found murdered in a car on June 11. Authorities have arrested two men, Jaspreet Singh and Nimratjit Singh, while the primary suspect, Amritpal Singh Mehron—a Nihang Sikh leader—remains at large.

Mehron allegedly orchestrated the murder due to his disapproval of Kumari’s bold online content, which he claimed was vulgar and disrespectful to Sikh and Punjabi values. He had previously criticized influencers using Sikh surnames and, following the murder, posted videos justifying the act and threatening other content creators, warning that similar actions could occur if such content continues.

The incident has triggered widespread concern among male and female influencers across Punjab, many of whom have reported receiving death threats in the days since the murder.
