Mahandri Bridge Update: Can You Travel to Naran and Kaghan Now?

19 June, 2025 17:49

The Mahandri Bridge on Kaghan Highway has officially reopened for all types of traffic after a planned four-day construction closure from June 15 to June 18, 2025. This key bridge is a vital part of the road network in Mansehra district, connecting popular tourist spots such as Naran and Kaghan Valley.

On Thursday, June 19, travelers reported heavy traffic and disorganized vehicle flow around the Mahandri Bridge. Congestion was caused by double-lane formations and the high number of vehicles, especially as tourism season picks up. Despite this, the bridge is now fully functional and open to all vehicle types, including heavy transport.

The Mahandri Bridge had previously collapsed due to a flash flood on July 30, 2024. The overflow from the Munawar Nullah destroyed the structure, cutting off road access and stranding thousands of tourists in the scenic Kaghan Valley. Emergency efforts were led by the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), with support from the Pakistan Army. Within just 14 days, the bridge was rebuilt and traffic resumed on August 13, 2024.

During the previous reconstruction phase, authorities provided a temporary pedestrian route and allowed light vehicles to cross in a controlled manner. The recent closure this June was for final touches and construction-related improvements. No future shutdowns have been announced so far.

The Mahandri Bridge is crucial for tourism in northern Pakistan. It supports local businesses and ensures access to top destinations in the Hazara Division. To improve regional connectivity, the NHA has also installed more than 200 compact steel bridges across the broader Mahandri region.

Authorities advise travelers to stay updated on road conditions and drive carefully, especially during peak travel hours. Travelers heading to Naran or Babusar Pass should consider alternate routes if possible.
