Berlin Primary School Evacuated After Suspected Tear Gas Attack, 37 Children Injured

A suspected tear gas attack at Miriam Makeba Elementary School in the Moabit district of Berlin has left one child hospitalised and 37 others injured, according to emergency services.

The incident happened around 9am when students began experiencing eye pain and breathing problems. Authorities say emergency medical teams were quickly dispatched, and the school building was evacuated and ventilated.

Children Treated on Site, One Hospitalised

In total, there were around 400 students at the school during the incident. Berlin Fire Department confirmed that 37 children received treatment at the scene, while one child was taken to hospital for further care.

Emergency personnel stayed on-site for about two hours, with 42 responders attending to the situation. Authorities have since reopened the school after confirming the area was safe.

Police Investigating the Cause

Berlin Police released a brief statement on social media: “Shortly after 9am, our emergency services were alerted to the Miriam Makeba Elementary School in Moabit. At least ten children are reportedly complaining of eye and respiratory irritation. They are currently being treated by emergency personnel. The building has been evacuated and ventilated.”

Officials have not confirmed the source of the gas but say they are investigating both the cause and any possible suspects. They added there is no longer any danger to students or staff.

Parents Notified

The school administration has informed all parents of the incident. While the situation is now under control, the event has raised concerns about student safety and the need for stricter security measures in schools.
