Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on ongoing power sector reforms, emphasizing uninterrupted electricity for industries and relief for the public.
He instructed authorities to speed up the privatization of loss-making GENCOs (power generation companies) and ensure live broadcasting of the auction process, similar to other privatization programs.
PM Shehbaz also directed that the installation of smart meters be completed swiftly, with a detailed report submitted soon. He highlighted that switching tube wells in Balochistan to solar energy would boost agricultural productivity.
The Prime Minister further ordered the fast-tracking of privatization of electricity distribution companies and called for accelerated establishment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the country.
He also urged immediate action on approved projects to improve the national power transmission system, ensuring timely implementation.
Briefing the Prime Minister, officials noted that Rs 9 billion has already been generated from the first phase of GENCOs’ privatization. They also reported that successful negotiations with 36 IPPs (Independent Power Producers) have resulted in expected savings of Rs 3.69 trillion for the national treasury.
PM Shehbaz added that consumers were provided tariff relief during the recent winter season and emphasized the continuation of reforms in power production, transmission, and distribution.
Updates were also shared on key transmission lines including Matiari, Moro, Rahim Yar Khan, Ghazi Barotha, and Faisalabad.
