BRT Peshawar increases bus fares – Check new fares

01 July, 2025 17:53

Starting today, Tuesday, July 1, 2025, the Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service has increased its fares. This new fare structure was announced earlier by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Urban Mobility Authority on June 16.

Under the updated system, fares for trips up to 5 kilometers have risen from Rs 20 to Rs 30. For journeys up to 40 kilometers, the fare is now Rs 70, up from Rs 60. Additionally, the price of a single-ride pass has also gone up to Rs 70 from Rs 60. The authority also imposed a Rs 10 increase per stop.

The official reason given for this fare increase is the rising inflation and the higher operational costs faced by the BRT service. Despite this, many commuters are unhappy with the hike. They say this will add financial pressure on daily travelers, making it harder for people to afford public transportation. Many feel this goes against the purpose of public transport, which is meant to be affordable and convenient.

This fare increase comes after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) announced in 2024 that it recovered Rs 168.5 billion related to the BRT Peshawar project. This recovery is considered the largest in NAB’s 25-year history. The investigation began in 2018 due to allegations of contract irregularities and misuse of funds.

The BRT fare increase and the corruption probe both highlight ongoing challenges in maintaining and managing public transport projects in Pakistan.
